Google's Zeitgeist Young Minds 2011 Winners

Google and the Zeitgeist team are gearing up for its annual Zeitgeist event in few days. They are proud to announce this year's Zeitgeist Young Minds Ambassadors who will take their place alongside the Greatest Minds and innovators of today at Zeitgeist 2011, including the world-renowned physicist and cosmologist, Prof. Stephen Hawking. Previous speakers have included the Arch-Bishop Desmond Tutu, Superstar 'Will I Am' and global entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.
The competition was to find 12 exceptional, motivated and inspiring young adults from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa; who are making a positive impact in their worlds. Those 12 individuals have been found and selected.
They are:
Brian Magwaro Mogaka
Inspired by how the youth were living and surviving in the slums of Kenya, Brian founded a youth led organization which helps young people from the slums make a better life for themselves through activities and work.
Grace Ihejiamaizu
A passionate and committed graduate who is helping young people develop their leadership and entrepreneurship skills towards nation building, through her RYPE Project (Raising Young and Productive Entrepreneurs), an after-school youth development program.
Michael Mulunga
After observing the poor conditions that the youth in Namibia lived with, Michael decided to work youths from one of the poorest communities in his region to start a poultry project as part of them generating an income for themselves.
Karabo Thosa
Passionate audio and film student Karabo, along with her friend Taleni, have worked together to set up a community development programme for the children in South Africa.
Paul “Slim” Banda
An active Aids activist born HIV positive. Paul aims to empower other young people in Africa with HIV and help them to fight the stigma attached with their HIV status through his music and constant dialogue.
Orly Keit Setton
As a young, dedicated and passionate South African, Orli has set up ‘Re.think Leadership’ which aims to promote dialogue across boundaries existing in contemporary South African society and encourage youth leadership.
Matheus Zancul Ortega
Inspired to act after the terrible earthquake in Haiti, Matheus set up the Haiti Music School, to shine a positive, human light on the people of Haiti. Matheus believes in using the arts and creativity to make a positive impact and believes that love and initiative is enough to change the world.
Phofane Ludwick Marishane
A budding entrepreneur with a passion for learning and mentoring who also invented the worlds first and only bath substituting lotion ‘DryBath™ Gel’ aimed at providing an alternative to conventional baths which saves lives and water.
Richard Serunjogi
Richard heads up Policy for the Spirit of London Awards Foundation and is an Article 12 Advisor for UNICEF UK, he is also part of the UK Youth Parliament and campaigns hard for the rights of young people.
Sadiq Miah
The Founding Director of Future Voices International, a youth communication media school that works around the world. Sadiq aims to improve social cohesion through expressive media in segregated communities in Latin America.
Sebastian Thiel
As one of the UK’s most promising young entrepreneurs, Sebastian set up ‘Its Upshot’ a fashion and entertainment brand aimed at young people. ‘Its Upshot’ is about aiming high and standing tall despite hurdles and obstacles placed in front of you.
Anna Debenham
Appalled by the lack of education and decent advice out there for students wanting a career in web design or development, freelance web developer Anna set up http://scrunchup.com with the aims to improve IT education in the UK.
These winners will attend Zeitgeist 2011 from 15th to 17th May, just outside London, where they will take part in a series of bespoke master classes hosted by Google and get their hands on the latest Google gadget.
Some of them will even get the opportunity to address the audience at the prestigious event, where previous speakers have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former US President Bill Clinton, Black Eyed Peas superstar Will.I.Am and global entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

International Year of Youth!

In 2009 the United Nations declared that August 2010 – August 2011 would be the International Year of Youth. Now that 2011 has begun, and there are only nine months remaining in the International Year of Youth (IYY), it’s a good time to refocus our attention on the unique needs, desires, talent and aspirations of youth around the world.

First, let’s remember what youth, who represent 18% of the world’s population, are facing in today’s global environment. United Nations fact sheets tell us:
– In 2009, about 81 million young people were unemployed, the most ever;
– In 2008, young people accounted for 40% of all new global HIV infections in people aged 15 years and older;
– Children and youth are uniquely vulnerable to involuntary military recruitment;
– More that 1.8 million young people aged 15 to 24 die each year, mostly due to preventable causes.
But not all the news about today’s youth is discouraging. Young people everywhere are improving their societies and focusing their energies on the issues that matter most to them. For example, youths are leading the way on climate change, organizing campaigns to help victims of natural disasters, preparing to be the next generation of government leaders, and innovating new ways to educate their fellow young global citizens. In August President Obama’s Forum with Young African Leaders brought dozens of young men and women to Washington, DC to discuss the future of the African continent.
Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has said, “Youth should be given a chance to take an active part in the decision-making of local, national and global levels.” The IYY encourages “Everyone… to promote the ideals of peace, freedom, progress and solidarity towards the promotion of youth development.”

We could not do all of this without rounding it up with a "dinner/graduation ceremony". This took place on 19th March at the Apples Fried Chicken. On this special day, awards were given, certificates presented and most importantly, the trainess were divided in two groups of similar skills (Photography/Video Editing and Fashion Designing/Textile), and finally handed over to the two companies to serve as interns and volunteers.
"The day I heard of RYPE, I thought it was just an ordinary seminar but before I knew it I found my self in GLADDEM Digital Company. I have started snapping pictures, sitting on computer, editing pictures, doing invitation cards, ID cards, calendars, and many things I could not believe in my life. The one week training that brought together 15 secondary school graduates in Calabar was a leap into the dream and vision of the young and passionate volunteers who initiated the program. The important thing is that "we did not just tell them, we also showed them how to make a difference in this world".

The training which spanned from the 18th through 26th March 2011 left indelible marks on the lives of the young people. It was an intensive learning experience but it an exciting time for the participants as they learnt and drew experience from young professional who trained them in the areas of Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Career choice, volunteering, ethics and etiquette, personal development, self-awareness, presentation skills and time management.

"Become a Better You" is a book written by Joel Osteen. Joel is the Pastor for the largest church in America. His church is located in Houston, Texas. His books are among the New York Times bestselling books.
This book gives you guidance to learn how to enjoy the joys and blessings that God intended for all of us. His words are easy to understand and give you perception to various passages in the Bible as he references them while giving an explanation of their meaning.
I came across this great book and I thought to share it so you could not only include it in your every day life.

First RYPE Youth Forum @ Calabar

Aside consolidating on the basic entrepreneurial skills, goal setting, self awareness and leadership, which is the first goal in the action plan of RYPE Initiative, the main aim of the forum was to harness maximally the potentials, passion and strength of young people towards attaining socio-economic benefits for themselves, communities etc. It was to serve as a medium where young secondary school leavers can get application forms and become part of the one year RYPE program.
The one-day practical training program exposed the participants to a number of activities, which centered on creativity, leadership, teamwork, and goal setting. The facilitators included Esther Eshiet, Managing Partner at Verge Development Solution, which she co-founded; Toluleke Obadimu, Youth Development Consultant and Olawunmi Owolabi, the youngest Lecturer in the University of Calabar from the Department of Geology; They dealt on topics ranging from Creativity, Goal-Setting to Leadership respectively. The participants were taught to make right choices in life, set goals, think more creative, prepare themselves for success after school and position themselves for effective leadership, which will help in the development of the participants, their communities and Nigeria as a whole.
The Participants were at the end asked to individually state how they felt, what they have learnt and why the program should continue. We got such comments as, “This forum went beyond my expectation. Please we need such programs regularly”; “It was fantastic”; “I have learnt a lot today” all from the participants.

The one-day practical training program exposed the participants to a number of activities, which centered on creativity, leadership, teamwork, and goal setting. The facilitators included Esther Eshiet, Managing Partner at Verge Development Solution, which she co-founded; Toluleke Obadimu, Youth Development Consultant and Olawunmi Owolabi, the youngest Lecturer in the University of Calabar from the Department of Geology; They dealt on topics ranging from Creativity, Goal-Setting to Leadership respectively. The participants were taught to make right choices in life, set goals, think more creative, prepare themselves for success after school and position themselves for effective leadership, which will help in the development of the participants, their communities and Nigeria as a whole.Another highlight of the program was Ekpe Ita, the Chief Administrator of the website,www.secureink.com , who spoke to them about the secrets to passing JAMB and Post-JAMB examinations with ease. Last Prophet also lightened the atmosphere with his humorous and laudable comedies.
The Forum concluded with a final group exercise that enabled the participants share ideas on various issues in the State and the Country. Each group had representatives who spoke on their behalf and prizes were given to two outstanding Team representatives.
The Participants were at the end asked to individually state how they felt, what they have learnt and why the program should continue. We got such comments as, “This forum went beyond my expectation. Please we need such programs regularly”; “It was fantastic”; “I have learnt a lot today” all from the participants.The program sparked a lot of highlights in their minds and they left with the desire to set SMART goals for themselves, put more effort to work harder and develop their leadership and team work skills.
Application forms were further distributed to all the participants to enroll for the Leadership and Entrepreneurship training which will culminate in an internship program. This internship program is aimed at attaching the participants to professionals in various skills of interest to learn and volunteer for a period of 3 to 4 months. It would also foster and promote a Mentor-mentee relationship between the aspiring leaders/entrepreneurs and the already established ones.
